The Viking Project

The Viking Project is a male centred school improvement programme aimed at supporting the academic and social development of boys at Amersham School. Since its launch in 2017 we have supported a group of twenty students through tailored mentoring, group meetings and unique opportunities through outside walls experiences such as:

  • Judo masterclasses
  • Career meetings with local emergency services
  • Trip to the World Para Athletics Championships.

Progress is tracked and monitored throughout the programme and the project culminates in an adventure week to an activity centre if students meet specific behaviour and academic progress checks.

Now in its third year, we are looking to grow and expand the delivery of The Viking Project to a wider group of students and using the previous students as mentors for further support. Regular support meetings are put in place and each student receives their own male member of staff as a mentor to support further academic and social development.

The students enrolled in the programme display significant improvement in their engagement in general school life, academic progress and conduct around school. When asked, the boys had the following to say:

‘It makes me want to do better in school’

‘The trips were fun and educational’

‘I bonded with teachers more’

‘It allowed me to spend more time with my friends’

‘There was the chance to express ourselves in a non-school manner’

‘There was always something going on’
