Intent

Media studies is an interdisciplinary field that examines the creation, production, distribution, and consumption of media. It encompasses a wide range of topics, including:

  • Media production: How are media products, such as films, television shows, and websites, created?
  • Media industries: How are the media industries organized and financed, marketed, and regulated?
  • Media audiences: Who consumes media products, how do you target them, and how do they use them?
  • Representation in Media: What are the effects of media on individuals, society, and culture?
  • Media technology: How has technology changed the media landscape?

The intent of media studies is to provide students with a critical understanding of the media so that they can become informed and engaged consumers of media. Media studies also helps students to develop their own media literacy skills, which are essential for navigating the complex and ever-changing media environment. Students also gain empathy and understanding for cultures, genders, and ethnicities by observing and analysing representation. Analysis of set products expands students' ability to interpret the everyday world with empathy and creativity.

Here are some specific objectives of media studies:

  • To develop students' understanding of the different types of media and their production processes.
  • To help students critically analyse media messages and identify biases.
  • To explore the relationship between media and power.
  • To examine the role of media in shaping public opinion and culture.
  • To encourage students to become informed and engaged participants in the media landscape.

Media studies is an important field of study because it helps us to understand the world around us. The media are a powerful force in society, and it is important to be able to critically analyse their messages. Media studies also provides us with the tools we need to create our own media content and to participate in the public sphere.
