Amersham School

Key Stage 3

At Key Stage 3, students embark on a two year personalised learning journey by studying all National Curriculum subjects.

In the first two years of study at Amersham School students are exposed to a broad variety of subjects. Each lesson lasts for 75 minutes in order to allow for a deeper learning experience and for lessons which provide for a variety of learning styles. The carousel provision offers an immersive experience of a wide range of subjects which promotes academic progress and supports the development of CIRCLE skills.

Learning is accelerated to give flexibility to meet each of our students' individual needs, whilst maximising performance and engagement in the curriculum.  Student progress and performance are assessed through regular Teacher Assessment including those undertaken in Purposeful Practice week.

The Key Stage 3 curriculum provides a broad platform from which students can make informed choices for their Key Stage 4 journey.

The number of lessons over the school week timetable in Key Stage 3 is :

English, Mathematics, Science 3 lessons

CIRCLE Skills at Key Stage 3

At Amersham School, we are committed to preparing our students not only for academic success but also for life beyond the classroom. Our CIRCLE skills –Communication, Interpersonal, Research, Creativity, Learning to Learn, and Effective Self-Management – are embedded throughout the Key Stage 3 curriculum to help every student develop the confidence, resilience, and independence they need to thrive. These core skills are embedded across all subjects through 'The Amersham School Lesson' and co-curricular opportunities, ensuring that every student is challenged to think critically, work collaboratively, and take responsibility for their own learning.

  • Communication – Students are encouraged to express their ideas clearly, listen actively, and adapt their communication for different audiences and purposes.
  • Interpersonal – Through collaboration and teamwork, students learn how to respect and value the perspectives of others, building strong and positive relationships.
  • Research – We support students in developing curiosity and critical thinking by teaching them how to question, investigate, and evaluate information effectively.
  • Creativity – Learners are given opportunities to think innovatively, experiment with new approaches, and develop imaginative solutions across a range of subjects.
  • Learning to Learn – Students are guided to reflect on their learning styles, set goals, and build strategies that help them take ownership of their progress.
  • Effective Self-Managers – We place strong emphasis on organisation, responsibility, and resilience, enabling students to manage their time, behaviour, and learning independently.

By embedding CIRCLE skills across all aspects of Key Stage 3, we ensure our students are well-prepared for the challenges of Key Stage 4 and beyond, equipped with the skills to succeed academically, personally, and in their future careers.
